The air handler holds the blower that moves air through your entire home, the indoor coil that heats or cools that air, and often the auxiliary heat strips that back up a heat pump on the coldest days. When it works, you do not notice it; when it fails, you have no airflow, no comfort, and frequently no idea what the unit even is. Air handlers develop recognizable problems, and we diagnose the actual cause rather than guessing. The most common is a failed or failing blower motor — which leaves you with reduced airflow or none at all, and which we diagnose by testing the motor, its capacitor, and its control rather than simply condemning the whole unit. Others include a bad blower capacitor (an inexpensive part that mimics a motor failure), control-board faults, a failing blower wheel, and problems with the auxiliary heat strips or their sequencers. On the coil side, issues overlap with our evaporator coil work, including the formicary corrosion leaks common in our humid climate. We find the specific fault and fix what is actually wrong — a $200 capacitor should never be sold as a $2,000 air handler.
When an air handler is genuinely at the end of its life, or when you replace the outdoor unit, the matching question becomes critical. An air handler and the outdoor heat pump or AC it serves should be an AHRI-matched set — certified to deliver their rated efficiency and capacity as a pair. Replacing an outdoor unit while keeping an old, mismatched air handler is a common shortcut that quietly costs you the efficiency you paid for, and can undermine warranty and rebate eligibility, which usually require a matched system. When we replace an air handler, we match it correctly, size it to your home’s load, and verify the airflow. And on a heat pump system, we make sure the auxiliary heat is properly configured, so your backup heat works when needed without running expensively when it is not.
An air handler exists to move air, so airflow is the measure of whether it is doing its job — and airflow problems are where comfort and efficiency quietly disappear. Restricted airflow, from a mismatched blower, a too-restrictive filter, or duct problems, causes a heat pump’s coil to underperform in both modes and can trip the system on its safety controls. We check static pressure — the actual back-pressure the blower works against — when we install or service an air handler, because a blower fighting excessive static pressure wears out early and never delivers rated comfort. This ties into the rest of the system: correct filtration and sound ductwork are what let the air handler actually move the air your home needs.
