Here is the single most important thing to understand about refrigerant: a properly working air conditioner never needs more of it. Refrigerant circulates in a sealed loop and is not consumed. So if your system is low, it is not because the refrigerant “ran out” or “got old” — it is because there is a leak, and that leak is still there. A contractor who simply tops off your charge and leaves has sold you a temporary fix that vents potent greenhouse gas into the atmosphere and guarantees you will be calling again, often within the same season. We do it the right way: find the leak, repair it, then recharge to the manufacturer’s exact specification.
When an air conditioner cools weakly, ices up, or runs constantly without keeping up, low refrigerant is a common cause — but it is a symptom of the underlying leak, not a maintenance item like an oil change. Refrigerant does not deplete with use. Every time a system is “topped off” without finding the leak, three things happen: you pay for refrigerant that leaks right back out, the escaping refrigerant harms the environment (and, for older R-22, costs a small fortune), and the low-charge condition keeps damaging your compressor in the meantime. The honest service is leak detection and repair first — the recharge is just the final step once the loop is sealed again.
Leak detection is a skill, because refrigerant leaks are often slow and invisible. We use the methods the situation calls for: electronic leak detectors that sense refrigerant in the air near a leak, UV dye introduced into the system and traced with a UV light, and pressure and vacuum testing to confirm whether the system holds. Common leak points in this area’s systems include the evaporator coil — where formicary corrosion drills microscopic pinholes especially in humid climates — the line-set connections, the Schrader valve cores, and brazed joints. Once we locate it, we can tell you honestly whether it is a straightforward repair, like a valve core or a fitting, or something more involved like a corroded coil that raises a repair-versus-replace question.
Once the leak is repaired, recharging is done to the manufacturer’s exact specification — not “until it seems right.” We evacuate the system into a deep vacuum with a micron gauge to remove air and moisture that would otherwise damage it, then weigh in the precise charge and verify it with superheat and subcooling readings. Overcharging is as harmful as undercharging: too much refrigerant floods the compressor and hurts efficiency, too little starves it and shortens its life. Measuring the charge rather than guessing is what protects the compressor and delivers the efficiency the system was designed for.
Which refrigerant your system uses affects the recharge decision. Older systems run R-22, which is no longer produced and has become very expensive — a significant R-22 leak often tips the math toward replacement rather than repeatedly buying scarce refrigerant. Most systems from the last decade or so use R-410A, and new equipment now ships with lower-GWP A2L refrigerants like R-454B under the AIM Act phasedown. Part of an honest recharge conversation is telling you where your refrigerant type factors into whether repairing the leak or replacing the system is the smarter move.
