Duct cleaning is one of the most oversold services in the whole HVAC industry — pitched aggressively with alarming photos and “whole house special” pricing, often by companies that do it badly or upsell relentlessly once inside. So here is our honest position: duct cleaning is genuinely worthwhile in specific situations and a waste of money in others, and the bigger opportunity for most homes is not cleaning the ducts but sealing them. We will tell you straight which applies to your home. What we will not do is sell you a routine cleaning your ducts do not need, or use it as a foot in the door to push services you did not ask for.
There are real cases where cleaning the ductwork is worth doing:
Just as important is knowing when duct cleaning is not the answer. In a home with reasonably clean ducts, a decent filter, and no specific problem, routine duct cleaning delivers little measurable benefit — the studies on it are underwhelming precisely because most household dust does not sit in the ducts, it circulates and gets caught by the filter. If a company is selling you annual duct cleaning as necessary maintenance, or quoting a suspiciously cheap price that turns into a large upsell at the door, that is a red flag. We would rather tell you your ducts do not need cleaning than take money for a service that will not help you.
Here is what actually helps most homes in our area, and it is not cleaning — it is sealing. Duct systems leak, often badly, especially in the older homes here where ducts run through unconditioned attics, crawlspaces, and basements. Leaky supply ducts dump the air you paid to heat or cool into spaces you do not live in; leaky return ducts pull in hot, humid, dusty attic and crawlspace air and distribute it through your house. The consequences are real: higher energy bills, rooms that never get comfortable, and — critically in our humid climate — humidity pulled straight into the system from a hot attic. Sealing those leaks improves efficiency, comfort, and humidity control all at once. It also addresses one root cause of a dusty house far more effectively than cleaning does, by stopping the system from drawing in dust in the first place. We measure and seal ductwork, and for most homes it is a better investment than cleaning.
Rather than arriving with a cleaning to sell, we assess. We look at whether your ducts actually need cleaning based on the situations above, and we evaluate duct leakage, because in our experience that is where most homes have the real problem. Then we tell you honestly what will help: cleaning, sealing, both, or neither. If cleaning is warranted, we do it properly — not with a shop vac at a register, but with the equipment to actually clean the system. If sealing is the priority, we address the leaks. And if your ducts are genuinely fine, we will tell you that and save you the money. This ties directly to airflow, too: sealed, properly sized ducts are what let the rest of your system — and any filtration upgrade — actually work.
Whether your ducts need cleaning, sealing, or nothing at all, we will tell you straight. Call for an honest evaluation of your ductwork.
