The compressor is the heart of an air conditioner and the single most expensive component to replace, which makes it the repair where honesty matters most. When a system stops cooling, “the compressor is shot” is a diagnosis some contractors reach for quickly, because it justifies either a costly compressor swap or a whole-system replacement. Sometimes it is true. Often it is not — the compressor is fine, and what actually failed is a capacitor, a contactor, or the charge feeding it. The compressor is the pump that circulates refrigerant through the system, pressurizing it so it can absorb and release heat. But compressors rarely fail on their own — they usually fail because something else went unaddressed. Chronic low refrigerant charge from an unrepaired leak makes a compressor run hot and overwork.
