A Mount Rainier case study in bringing air conditioning to a home built for radiators.
A Mount Rainier household lived in a historic home heated by radiators — comfortable in winter, but with no ductwork anywhere and therefore no central air conditioning. Through our humid summers they relied on window units that were noisy, unsightly, and uneven, and they were tired of it. They wanted proper, whole-home cooling but faced the obvious obstacle: a home built for radiant heat has no ducts to carry cooled air, and adding conventional ductwork to a historic house is invasive and costly.
The situation was a common one for Mount Rainier’s radiator-heated homes: excellent heat, no path for central cooling. Retrofitting ductwork through a historic home would mean tearing into walls and ceilings, sacrificing closet and living space to chases, and risking the home’s character — a lot of disruption and expense for a compromised result. But the lack of ductwork did not rule out real cooling. The home was well suited to a ductless mini-split system, which cools without any ductwork at all, letting the beloved radiator heat stay exactly as it was.
We designed a ductless solution for the home. Ductless mini-splits use one or more outdoor units connected to slim indoor units by small line-sets, each cooling its area with only a minor penetration through an exterior wall — no ductwork, no major construction. We planned the number and placement of indoor units to cool the home evenly while keeping the visual impact minimal, and sized the system to control our summer humidity properly. The radiator system was left untouched to keep providing winter heat. The result is a home that keeps its historic radiant heat and gains modern cooling, each doing what it does best.
The household finally had genuine, even, whole-home cooling through the summer — quiet and efficient, with the window units gone for good — while keeping the radiator heat they valued in winter. The home’s character was preserved, since no ductwork had to be forced through its walls and ceilings. It is a textbook Mount Rainier solution: for the many historic homes here that were built for radiators and never had ducts, ductless mini-splits are often the ideal way to add real cooling without compromising the home.
