A Hyattsville case study in why combustion safety comes before everything else.
A homeowner in [NEIGHBORHOOD/AREA] called us for what seemed like a minor concern — the furnace was [SYMPTOM, e.g. cycling oddly and producing a faint odor] — and asked us to take a look. Our inspection turned up a serious problem: a crack in the furnace’s heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is the metal barrier that keeps combustion gases — including carbon monoxide — separated from the air your home breathes, and a crack in it can allow those gases to mix into the airflow. That is a genuine safety hazard, not a comfort issue. We also found a related problem common in older homes: when a previous furnace had been [PRIOR WORK, e.g. upgraded years earlier], the water heater had been left venting into an oversized chimney flue on its own — an “orphaned” water heater that can struggle to vent properly and risk carbon monoxide. Two safety issues, both invisible to the homeowner.
We were direct with the homeowner about what we found and why it mattered. A cracked heat exchanger is not something to patch and hope; the safe course was to shut the compromised furnace down and replace it. We walked through the options honestly — there was no upselling needed, because the safety case was clear — and sized the replacement furnace correctly for the home with a load calculation. Crucially, we also corrected the orphaned water-heater venting as part of the job, resizing the venting so the water heater would vent safely rather than leaving that hazard in place. Fixing the furnace without addressing the flue would have left the home only half-safe.
The home came away genuinely safe: a new, correctly sized furnace with an intact heat exchanger, and a water heater venting properly instead of into an oversized orphaned flue. We confirmed safe operation by measurement before we left, and recommended [SAFETY RECOMMENDATION, e.g. carbon monoxide detectors on every level] as a standing safeguard. The homeowner had called about an odd furnace noise and, without alarmism, came away from the visit with two real carbon-monoxide risks eliminated. It is the clearest example of why we check combustion safety on every older system, whether or not the homeowner suspects a problem.
