Boiler installation is a different discipline than forced-air work, though — the piping, sizing, and controls all matter in ways a furnace installer may not appreciate. Boilers heat with water rather than air, and that changes the comfort. Hot-water (hydronic) systems circulate heated water through radiators or baseboard, warming rooms with steady radiant and convective heat that many people find more comfortable and even than forced air — no blowing air, no sudden temperature swings, no dust pushed through ducts. Steam systems, common in the oldest homes, work on a different principle but share that quiet, radiant character. For a home built around hydronic heat, replacing a failing boiler with a new one is usually far more sensible than gutting the house to install ductwork, and it keeps the comfort the home was designed to deliver.
Two things determine whether a boiler installation performs, and both are easy to get wrong. The first is sizing. A boiler should be sized to the home’s actual heat loss and, for steam and much hot-water work, to the connected radiation — the total heat-emitting capacity of the radiators. An oversized boiler short-cycles, wastes fuel, and on steam systems can cause uneven heating and banging pipes. The second is the near-boiler piping — the arrangement of pipes immediately around the boiler. Condensing boilers need proper primary-secondary piping to protect the unit and deliver rated efficiency, and steam boilers are especially unforgiving: manufacturers specify exact near-boiler piping, and deviating from it produces wet steam, poor performance, and noise. We install to the manufacturer’s specifications, because a boiler is only as good as the piping around it.
The most common frustration in a hydronic home is the lack of air conditioning — there are no ducts to carry cool air. The good news is that you do not have to choose between keeping your comfortable boiler heat and having modern cooling. A ductless mini-split system adds efficient air conditioning (and supplemental heating) without any ductwork, pairing perfectly with a boiler-heated house. Many homeowners in the historic neighborhoods keep their radiators for winter warmth and add ductless for summer cooling, getting the best of both. Boiler installation involves gas, water, and venting, and we handle all three to code. The gas connection is made under our WSSC Water gasfitter license; the mechanical permit is pulled through the Prince George’s County Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement; and the venting — whether a condensing boiler’s PVC sidewall vent or a conventional boiler’s flue — is installed and verified correctly. We commission the finished system: setting controls, purging air from hot-water systems, checking the pressure and expansion tank, and confirming safe combustion and venting.
